What is Keloid & Raised Scar Treatment?
A keloid is a raised scar that grows beyond the edges of the original wound, while a hypertrophic scar stays within it. Both can be itchy, tender or firm, and they often appear after piercings, acne, burns, surgery or vaccination. They are more common on the chest, shoulders, upper back and earlobes, and in some families. Darker skin types can be more prone to them.
The main treatment is a series of steroid injections into the scar every few weeks. These help flatten and soften the scar and ease itching. Depending on the scar, your doctor may combine this with laser to reduce redness or improve texture, silicone gel or sheets, pressure, or cryotherapy. Treatment is gradual and needs several sessions. Results vary.
It is important to be honest: keloids can come back, even after good treatment, and they cannot always be fully removed. Cutting a keloid out alone often makes it return larger, so surgery is used only with other measures. Steroid injections can sometimes thin the skin or lighten its colour. Your doctor will check the scar, explain the options and plan carefully at a consultation.
How it works
- 01
Scar assessment
Your doctor examines the scar, asks how and when it formed, checks your health and medicines, and takes photos.
- 02
Treatment plan
A plan is made, usually steroid injections, with laser, silicone, pressure or cryotherapy added where they may help.
- 03
Injection sessions
Small amounts of steroid are injected into the scar with a fine needle. Numbing may be used. Sessions are repeated every few weeks.
- 04
Review and prevention
Progress is checked at each visit. You get advice to lower the chance of the scar coming back.

Keloid & Raised Scar Treatment FAQs
Can keloids be removed completely?
Not always. Treatment can flatten, soften and ease itching, but keloids can return. The aim is a scar that is less noticeable and more comfortable.
Why not just cut the keloid out?
Cutting a keloid out alone often makes it grow back larger. When surgery is used, it is combined with other measures such as injections.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the size and age of the scar. Most people need several sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Results vary.
Does laser help keloids?
Laser can help reduce redness and improve texture, usually alongside injections. It is rarely enough on its own for a keloid.
Can I pierce my ears again after an earlobe keloid?
Your doctor will usually advise against it, as the keloid may return. Discuss your risk at consultation.
How much does keloid treatment cost?
The cost depends on the size and number of scars and the sessions needed. Your doctor confirms the plan and the cost at a free consultation before anything is booked. EMI is available.
