Understanding loose skin & cellulite

Loose skin and cellulite are two of the most common body concerns, and they often appear together. Loose skin happens when skin loses collagen and elasticity — with age, after pregnancy or after weight loss — and cannot fully spring back. Common areas are the tummy, upper arms, inner thighs and knees. How much skin tightens back on its own depends on age, genetics, sun damage and how much weight was lost.

Cellulite is the dimpled, “orange-peel” look on the thighs, buttocks, hips and sometimes the tummy and arms. It is caused by fat pushing up against fibrous bands that tether the skin, and it is extremely common in women of every size and fitness level. Hormones, genetics, circulation and skin thickness all play a part. Cellulite is not a medical problem, but many people would like it to look smoother.

Non-surgical treatments can improve firmness, tone and the look of cellulite over a course of sessions. They work gradually and are not a replacement for weight loss or surgery in cases of very loose skin. At Paradise Wellness, a doctor assesses the area and combines technologies to suit your goals. Results vary and are best maintained with a stable weight and an active lifestyle.

Treatments that can help

Your doctor recommends the right one — or a combination — after assessing your skin.

What a plan usually looks like

  1. Consultation & assessmentA doctor examines the area, takes measurements and checks for anything that makes certain technologies unsuitable, such as implants or pregnancy.
  2. Personal planTwo or three technologies are often combined — for example, tightening with toning, or acoustic waves with lymphatic drainage.
  3. Course of sessionsMost body treatments are given weekly over six to ten sessions, with RF microneedling spaced about four weeks apart.
  4. Review progressMeasurements and photos are compared and the plan is adjusted as needed.
  5. MaintainFull results develop over one to three months; maintenance sessions and a stable weight help keep them.

Typical experience — plans and results vary from person to person.

Helpful at home

  • Stay active, including strength training, to build muscle tone under the skin.
  • Keep your weight as stable as possible to avoid further stretching of the skin.
  • Drink enough water and limit excess salt to reduce fluid retention.
  • Moisturise daily and use sunscreen on exposed body areas to protect collagen.
  • Avoid smoking, which damages collagen and circulation.

See a doctor promptly if

  • Swelling, pain or redness in one leg — seek medical care promptly
  • Skin that is hot, red and tender, which may be an infection
  • Sudden swelling in the legs or ankles
  • Rapid, unexplained weight loss or gain

Loose skin & cellulite FAQs

Can cellulite be removed completely?

Cellulite is very common and has structural causes, so no treatment can remove it completely or permanently. Treatments such as X-Wave, Mobilizer and body contouring can improve its appearance and make the skin look smoother and firmer. Staying active and keeping a stable weight help maintain results.

Can loose skin tighten without surgery?

Mild to moderate loose skin can often be improved with non-surgical treatments such as radiofrequency, Body Exilis and Morpheus8, which stimulate collagen over time. Very loose skin, for example after major weight loss, may need surgery for a significant change. Your doctor will be honest about what to expect.

How many sessions of body contouring will I need?

Most body contouring courses involve six to ten sessions, usually weekly. Results build gradually, with full results typically seen one to three months after the course. Your doctor will set a plan based on your goals and the area treated.

Is body contouring a weight-loss treatment?

No. Body contouring treatments tone, tighten and smooth the skin and muscle, and some reduce small areas of fat, but they are not a replacement for weight loss. They give the best results alongside a healthy diet, regular activity and a stable weight.

Why do slim people get cellulite?

Cellulite depends largely on skin structure, hormones and genetics, not just body fat. The way fibrous bands tether the skin creates the dimpled look, so even slim and very fit people can have it. It is a normal feature of many women’s skin.
