Understanding acne & breakouts

Acne is one of the most common skin concerns we see, in teenagers and increasingly in adults in their twenties, thirties and beyond. It starts when oil and dead skin block the pores. Bacteria that normally live on the skin then multiply in the blocked pore, causing redness, swelling and pus. Hormones, stress, diet and the products you use can all make it worse.

Delhi’s climate adds its own challenges. Humid monsoon months and hot summers increase sweat and oil, while pollution particles settle on the skin and in the pores. Many people respond by scrubbing harder or trying several products at once, which often irritates the skin and makes breakouts worse. Heavy creams, oily hair products and not removing sunscreen or makeup properly at night can also keep pores blocked.

Treating acne early matters, because inflamed pimples on Indian skin often leave dark marks and, in deeper cases, scars. At Paradise Wellness a doctor assesses the type and severity of your acne and looks for underlying triggers, such as hormonal imbalance. Plans combine a simple home routine, in-clinic treatments and prescription treatments where your doctor thinks they are appropriate. Results vary.

Types of acne & breakouts

Comedonal acne

Mainly blackheads and whiteheads with little redness. Often responds well to regular exfoliation and clinical facials.

Inflammatory acne

Red papules and pus-filled pustules. Usually needs a combination of home care, in-clinic treatment and sometimes prescription treatment.

Nodular and cystic acne

Deep, painful lumps that can scar. This needs prompt medical care from a doctor.

Hormonal acne

Breakouts on the jawline and chin that follow the menstrual cycle. Your doctor may suggest tests to look for an underlying cause such as PCOS.

Treatments that can help

Your doctor recommends the right one — or a combination — after assessing your skin.

What a plan usually looks like

  1. Consultation & skin assessmentA doctor grades your acne, reviews your products, diet and cycle, and checks for signs of a hormonal cause.
  2. Simplify your routineYou get a short, non-irritating home routine, with prescription treatments where your doctor thinks they are appropriate.
  3. In-clinic treatmentsPeels, carbon peels or clinical facials every two to four weeks help clear congestion and calm inflammation.
  4. Treat marks and scarsOnce breakouts settle, any remaining marks or scars are addressed with a separate plan.
  5. Maintain clear skinPeriodic sessions and a steady routine help keep breakouts from returning.

Typical experience — plans and results vary from person to person.

Helpful at home

  • Wash your face twice a day and after sweating with a gentle, non-soap cleanser — no harsh scrubs.
  • Use a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser and an oil-free sunscreen every day.
  • Introduce one new product at a time so you can tell what helps and what irritates.
  • Change pillowcases often and wipe your phone screen regularly.
  • Do not pick, squeeze or apply toothpaste, lemon or other home remedies to spots.
  • Remove makeup fully before sleeping and look for “non-comedogenic” on the label.

See a doctor promptly if

  • Deep, painful cysts or nodules, or acne that is leaving scars
  • Acne with irregular periods, excess facial hair or scalp hair thinning
  • Sudden severe acne in adulthood or after starting a new medicine
  • Breakouts that have not improved after two to three months of consistent care
  • Acne that is affecting your confidence, mood or daily life

Acne & breakouts FAQs

Why am I getting acne in my thirties?

Adult acne is common, especially in women. Hormonal changes, stress, poor sleep, new skincare or makeup, and conditions such as PCOS can all play a part. It often appears on the jawline and chin. A doctor can look for underlying triggers and suggest a plan that suits adult skin, which is often drier and more sensitive than teenage skin.

Does diet cause acne?

Diet is not the only cause, but for some people high-sugar foods and certain dairy products seem to worsen breakouts. Noticing your own patterns is more useful than cutting out whole food groups. A balanced diet, enough water and good sleep support the skin, alongside proper treatment.

Can a facial help acne?

A medical facial or peel done in a clinic can clear congestion, reduce oil and calm mild to moderate acne. Salon facials with heavy massage or harsh extraction can sometimes make acne worse. For inflamed or cystic acne, in-clinic treatments are usually combined with a doctor’s prescription.

How long does it take to clear acne?

Most acne plans take six to twelve weeks to show a clear improvement, because the skin needs time to respond and pores take weeks to clear. Stopping too early is one of the most common reasons acne returns. Your doctor will review progress and adjust the plan.

Is it fungal acne or regular acne?

Fungal acne is actually an infection of the hair follicles by yeast. It usually looks like many small, similar-sized, itchy bumps on the forehead, chest or back, and often worsens in heat and humidity. It needs different treatment from regular acne, so a doctor’s diagnosis is worth getting if standard acne care has not helped.

Will my acne leave scars?

Blackheads and small pimples rarely scar, but deep, inflamed or cystic acne can. Picking also increases the risk. Treating acne early is the best way to prevent scars. Flat dark marks left after pimples are common on Indian skin and usually fade with sun protection and treatment.
