A thread lift uses fine, dissolvable medical threads placed under the skin to lift sagging cheeks, jowls or brows without surgery. It gives a visible lift straight away, recovery is usually a few days, and the threads stimulate collagen as they dissolve.

It is also a treatment where expectations matter. A thread lift is not a surgical face-lift, results do fade, and the best outcomes come from careful patient selection. This guide covers how it works, what it costs in Delhi, how long it lasts and the risks.

How does a thread lift work?

A doctor numbs small entry points with local anaesthetic and guides threads under the skin with a fine needle or cannula. Some threads have tiny barbs or "cogs" that grip the tissue so it can be gently repositioned upwards. Others are smooth and work mainly by stimulating collagen.

Over the following months, the threads dissolve. The collagen formed around them helps support the tissue after the threads have gone. Our thread lift page explains the procedure at our clinics.

Types of threads

  • PDO (polydioxanone): the most widely used and studied absorbable thread
  • PLLA or PCL threads: other absorbable materials designed to dissolve more slowly and stimulate collagen
  • Mono and screw threads: smooth threads for skin quality and mild tightening, not a real lift
  • Cog threads: barbed threads that provide the actual lift for cheeks, jowls and jawline

A 2025 systematic review in Dermatologic Surgery of 12 studies and 818 patients found PDO was the most commonly evaluated thread, followed by PLLA/PCL threads.

What can a thread lift treat?

  • Early to moderate sagging of the mid-cheek
  • Mild jowls and a softer jawline
  • Low or heavy brows, for a subtle lift
  • Neck looseness, in selected cases
  • Loss of definition after weight loss, usually combined with volume treatments

A thread lift is not the right tool for heavy sagging, large amounts of loose skin or deep folds. In those cases surgery, or a combination of treatments, gives a better result.

How long does a thread lift last?

This is where you will see the biggest claims online. Many clinics quote two to three years. The evidence is more cautious.

The 2025 review found that patients improved immediately in all included studies, but the longest follow-up was two years and long-term effectiveness has not been proven. An earlier 2019 review reached a similar conclusion: newer absorbable threads have fewer complications than the older permanent ones, but how long results last is still unclear.

In practice, our doctors expect a typical thread lift to last around 12 months, varying with your skin, age, the threads used and lifestyle. Some people keep a degree of improvement longer because of the collagen formed. Maintenance or combining with other treatments helps extend results.

What happens on the day?

  1. Assessment and marking. The doctor maps the direction of lift on your face.
  2. Numbing. Local anaesthetic at the entry points.
  3. Placing threads. Threads are guided under the skin and gently adjusted.
  4. Settling. The face may look slightly over-lifted or uneven at first while swelling settles.

The procedure usually takes about an hour.

Recovery and aftercare

  • Swelling, tenderness and mild bruising for a few days
  • Tightness or a pulling feeling when you open your mouth wide, for 1–2 weeks
  • Small dimples or puckering near entry points, which usually settle as swelling goes down

For the first week or two, sleep on your back, avoid wide mouth opening (including dental work), heavy chewing, facial massage, intense exercise, saunas and facials. Our thread lift aftercare guide lists the full instructions.

Most people return to work within 2–3 days.

Side effects and risks

The 2025 review described complications as generally mild, with a low risk of dangerous ones. Possible issues include:

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Asymmetry
  • Dimpling or skin puckering
  • A thread that becomes visible or pokes through the skin (extrusion)
  • Infection, which is uncommon with proper technique
  • Temporary nerve irritation or discomfort

Most of these are manageable and many settle on their own. Choosing an experienced doctor who uses genuine, approved threads reduces the risk.

Who should not have a thread lift?

  • People with very heavy sagging or thick, heavy facial tissue
  • Anyone with active skin infection in the area
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • People with uncontrolled bleeding disorders or certain autoimmune conditions
  • Those expecting a surgical result without surgery

Thread lift vs HIFU vs fillers

Thread lift HIFU Fillers
What it does Repositions tissue Tightens deeper layers Restores volume
Result timing Immediate Builds over 2–3 months Immediate
Downtime 2–3 days Minimal Minimal
Best for Early sagging, jowls Mild laxity Hollows, lost support

Many people get the most natural result by combining them: fillers to replace lost support, threads for lift and HIFU or skin boosters for quality. Read HIFU vs Ultherapy and our guide to non-surgical facelift options to compare.

Thread lift cost in Delhi

When comparing quotes, ask how many threads are included, what type they are, who performs the procedure and whether follow-up is included.

Frequently asked questions

Is a thread lift painful?

Local anaesthetic makes the procedure comfortable for most people. Expect some soreness and tightness for a few days afterwards.

Can a thread lift go wrong?

Problems such as asymmetry, dimpling or a visible thread can happen. Most settle or can be corrected. Serious complications are uncommon with an experienced doctor.

When will I see results?

You will see a lift immediately. The final look is clearer after 2–4 weeks, once swelling settles, and collagen continues to build over the following months.

Can threads be removed?

Absorbable threads dissolve on their own. If a thread causes a problem early on, a doctor can usually adjust or remove it.

Is a thread lift better than a face-lift?

No – it is different. A thread lift suits early sagging and gives a shorter-lasting, subtler lift with little downtime. A surgical face-lift suits more advanced sagging and lasts much longer.

The bottom line

A thread lift can give a visible, natural lift with a short recovery for the right person: early to moderate sagging, realistic expectations and a skilled doctor. Results typically last around a year, and long-term evidence is still limited, so be cautious of promises of years-long results.
