Chemical Peels & BioRePeel Aftercare
Peels work by renewing the top layers of skin, so the days after a peel matter as much as the peel itself. BioRePeel usually causes only light flaking; depigmentation peels such as Cosmelan can cause several days of redness and peeling. Your doctor will tell you which applies to you.

Your own doctor’s instructions always come first. If anything here is different from what you were told at the clinic, follow your doctor and ask us if you are unsure.
Before your appointment
- Avoid sun and tanning for 2 weeks
- Pause retinol, retinoids, acids and scrubs 5–7 days before
- No facial waxing, threading or laser hair removal on the face for 1 week before
- Tell us if you get cold sores — you may need medicine beforehand
- Tell us about pregnancy, breastfeeding and all medicines
After your treatment, step by step
Day of the peel
Do- Follow your doctor’s timing exactly — Cosmelan masks are washed off at home after a set number of hours
- Wash gently with cool water and a mild cleanser
- Apply only the moisturiser and sunscreen you were given
Avoid- Makeup
- Heat: steam, sauna, hot showers, cooking over a hot stove for long
Days 1–5
Do- Moisturise often — tight, dry skin is expected
- Let skin peel on its own
- Broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 50 every morning, reapplied every 2–3 hours when outdoors
Avoid- Picking, peeling or scrubbing flaking skin
- Gym, heavy sweating and swimming
- Any new products
Days 5–14
Do- Use your prescribed home cream exactly as instructed
- Makeup is usually fine once peeling has stopped
Avoid- Retinoids and acids until your doctor says so
- Sun exposure without protection
Ongoing
Do- Keep up your maintenance cream and sunscreen — pigmentation can return without them
- Attend your review appointment
Avoid- Stopping home care early
What to pause, and for how long
| Pause | For how long |
|---|---|
| Retinol, retinoids, AHA/BHA acids, scrubs | Until your doctor restarts them, usually 7–14 days |
| Facial waxing, threading, laser | 1–2 weeks after |
| Makeup | Usually 24–48 hours (BioRePeel) or once peeling has settled (depigmentation peels) |
Normal, and settles by itself
- Redness, tightness and a warm feeling for a few days
- Light flaking (BioRePeel) or visible peeling for up to 7–10 days (depigmentation peels)
- Temporary sensitivity to products
Call your clinic if you notice
- Blisters, oozing or yellow crusts
- Severe burning or swelling
- A cold sore flare
- Dark patches that appear or worsen
Aftercare questions
Can I peel off the flaking skin?
No. Pulling off skin before it is ready can cause marks and pigmentation. Moisturise and let it come away naturally.
When can I wear makeup after a peel?
After BioRePeel, usually the next day. After a depigmentation peel, wait until peeling has settled, and use only products your doctor approves.
